Cipro(floxacin) and the Lapband

Hi, everyone.

I have a UTI and was prescribed Cipro. I forgot to remind the nurse practitioner that I have a lapband. The reason for my complete unfill last year (and resultant acid reflux, swallowing issues, etc.) may have been due to my taking medication (not Cipro) for adult acne. Not wanting to go down that road again, I am hopeful that I can determine whether Cipro is safe at the outset. Since it is too late in the evening to call the lapband doctor's office (plus I have just changed doctors since my doctor retired on the 1st of February), I was curious if any of you have taken Cipro post-band (or heard anything about its use with the band)? What are your experiences? I have tried to look up what I can online, but it appears that there is a dearth of info concerning lapbands and Cipro.

Thanks in advance for your help! And I hope everyone is doing well.

P.S. I am still diligently reading all of your blogs...just don't comment as much because of some commenting link malfunctions on this end.

  1. cipro should be fine, pretty sure I've taken it since surgery. is it a capsule or a tablet? I just did a quick google and it's possible (anything is possible!) but very rare from what I can tell. is the pill large or fairly small? are you still deflated? anyway, if it's on the bigger side and you're able to split it I would just to be sure it goes down really easily, drink 8 ounces of water and stay upright for at least 30 mins -- I really don't think you'll have any problems :)

  2. Hey, Sarah. I was just thinking about you yesterday and wondering how you were doing. I hope everything is well. I updated my post with a picture I found online. Mine look like that. Can you see the pic? It is a solid white pill. I think that is a tablet (a capsule is the type you can break open with stuff inside, right? Why don't I know that? LOL!). My omeprazole pills (for heartburn/reflux) are bigger (like super cow sized), and I've taken them (not like it isn't somewhat of a chore though). I am a little over 1 cc in my band now. We have been moving very slowly with the re-fills. My doc is on the conservative side for adjustments. I think he didn't want to do too much before he retired in case I faced any complications. I didn't have a new doctor until the very day he retired, so that probably worried him too...along with the fact that he probably didn't want me to have major issues starting out with someone new (in case I would).

  3. I forgot to tell you thank you. I really appreciate the info! Are you still working with the bariatric surgeon by the way?

  4. I've taken Cipro two or three times since I've had my band with no problems.

  6. I'm a little late to the party, but whenever I'm feeling tight and have to take large-ish pills, I use my pill splitter to break them down as small as I can. Not sure if Cipro is one of those ones that can't be cut/crushed, but that's what I would do. So much better than it getting stuck and burning the hell out of your esophogus! good luck lady...

  7. I'm with JRD, I would cut them. I cut everything, though. I don't like taking chances. :)

Hope you've found some answers from your doc by now, but just wanted to add my two cents!

  8. Yes, I've had to take it for my diverticulitis -- two flare ups last summer, both of which I took Cipro to curb -- and I did fine with it. I just used a pill cutter to cut it in half and made sure to eat yogurt or take a probiotic (it is a really strong antibiotic, as you know!).
